Formal ethical principles are ethical principles expressible using only variables and constants -- where the constants can include logical terms, general psychological attitudes (like "believe," "desire," and "act"), and other fairly abstract notions (like "ought" and "ends-means").

To show how this works, I'll now present a matching exercise. I'll give you a variable-constant formula -- and you are to pick the common-sense principle that's closest to it. My variable-constant formulas are rough and oversimplified; I'll give better formulas later.
