Grand Canyon, Arizona - Thumbnails

These are pictures of my June 2002 dayhike across the Grand Canyon and back:
  1. On day one, I left the North Rim at sunrise, taking the North Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River and then the Bright Angel Trail up to the South Rim (which I reached in late afternoon); this was a 23.4 mile hike, going from 8255 feet elevation down to 2400 and then back up to 6785. Then I spent overnight at a lodge on the South Rim.
  2. On day two, I left the South Rim at sunrise, taking the South Kaibab Trail to the Colorado River and then the North Kaibab Trail up to the North Rim (which I reached in late afternoon); this was a 20.9 mile hike, going from 7200 feet elevation down to 2400 and then back up to 8255.
So the two days totalled 44.3 miles and 20895 feet of elevation change; while this is somewhat masochistic, it doesn't match what three guys I met a few years ago did -- they hiked from the North Rim to the South Rim and back to the North Rim in a single day (and were limping badly the next morning at breakfast in the North Rim Lodge). Anyway, this was my 12th hiking trip to the Grand Canyon, which is probably my favorite hiking destination. Click a little picture to enlarge it. NOTE: In 2003, I added more Grand Canyon pictures -- for the west, north, and east parts.
